A retractable awning offers protection from the hot Florida sun, giving you cool shade to enjoy your yard. During the fall and winter months, you may not need the awning as often, though. If you plan on giving yours a rest until spring, taking care of a few maintenance tasks will ensure it stays in good condition and won’t be damaged when the heat returns.
How to Care for Your Retractable Awning at the End of Summer
1. Sweep Away Loose Dirt
Using a soft-bristled broom, sweep both the top and underside of the awning to remove loose dirt, leaves, spider webs, and other debris. This helps keep the fabric looking bright and vibrant while preventing dirt from building up. Because leaves and flowers can contain acids that cause staining and deterioration of the fabric, make sure to remove them before retracting the awning.
2. Wash the Fabric

Leaving the awning fabric on the frame, give it a thorough cleaning with cool water and mild soap. Spray the top and underside of the awning, and then scrub off stubborn dirt using a soft-bristled brush.
Next, the soap needs to be thoroughly rinsed away since leaving residue behind can cause discoloration and encourage mold and mildew growth when the awning is retracted. It’s best not to retract the awning until it is completely dry, as the wet fabric may foster mildew growth.
3. Watch the Weather
Florida’s mild year-round climate means you may need to use the retractable awning throughout the winter. However, any time storms, strong winds, or heavy rain are in the forecast, don’t forget to retract the awning.
Extreme weather—meaning any time winds exceed 20 miles per hour—can damage the awning. When pulling it in, the fabric should be safely tucked inside the housing.
